Diana Spencer, no doubt, was the most popular princess in modern history. Although 20 years since her tragic passing, new generations of designers, along with women and girls around the globe, take inspiration by her regal and casual elegance which included her love of cultured pearls.
From childhood, Diana was often seen wearing pearl stud earring and simple strings of pearls. At the age of 16 as bridesmaid to her sister Jane, Diana wore a pair of pearl studs and a pearl necklace.
On her 18th birthday, Diana was given a triple-strand pearl choker by the Spencer family. Both of Diana's older sisters had also received matching chokers on their 18th birthdays. It consisted of three rows of pearls with a turquoise and pearl cluster clasp. The Princess later altered the clasp to be all pearls.
A wedding gift from Prince Charles were pearl earrings designed by the Collingwood Jewellers. Diana wore them continually throughout her marriage. They are now under possession of the Duchess of Cambridge who first wore them at a 2017 State Banquet.
Diana was regularly photographed wearing pearls, certainly one of her favourite gems. From Emir of Qatar floral pearl, Bulgari bracelet, tiaras, to an eleven-strand pearl choker. Some pieces were returned to the Crown after the end of her marriage to Prince Charles. However, it’s delightful to see some of her most personal and beautiful pieces have been passed on to Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge.
Diana was known as the ‘Peoples’ Princess. She was loved, cherished and admired by all. The Princess Diana effect launched an unprecedented demand for her favourite fashion styles which includes her lifelong passion for cultured pearls.
